Claude Cowork vs Claude Code: Which One Should You Use?
Claude Cowork and Claude Code run the same agentic engine. The difference is the surface, and it decides which one fits the work in front of you.
This is not a capability comparison. Claude Code and Claude Cowork run on the same agentic architecture, so the engine is identical. What differs is the surface. Cowork removes the terminal and runs your task remotely so you can walk away. Claude Code gives you a command line and direct local control over every step.
So the real question was never which one is more powerful.
It is whether you want to watch the work happen, or come back to it finished.
Every comparison page for these two tools lists features in two columns and leaves you exactly as undecided as you arrived. That happens because the features are mostly the same. The thing that actually decides it is your working style, and nobody is writing about that.
What is the difference between Claude Code and Claude Cowork?
Same engine, different surface. Anthropic built Cowork on the agentic architecture that already powers Claude Code, which means the reasoning, the tool use, and the multi-step execution are shared.
Claude Code is a command-line tool. It also runs inside the desktop app and other surfaces, but the command line is its native home. It works on your local files and asks approval on each action.
Cowork has no terminal. You start it by selecting Cowork in the message box, in the same interface where you already chat, and it runs your task remotely in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers.
One sentence of difference that matters: with Claude Code you supervise, with Cowork you delegate.
Do they do the same things?
Largely, yes. That is the part nobody says out loud.
Both run multi-step agentic work rather than answering a single question. Both require a paid Claude plan. Both draw from one shared usage pool that also covers your use of Claude on web, desktop, and mobile, so there is no separate meter running for either one.
If you have a task that involves reading a set of files, doing something with them, and producing an output, both tools can do it. The overlap is not a footnote. It is most of the surface area.
Which is why the decision is not about capability at all. It is about how you want to spend your attention while the work happens.
When should you use Cowork?
Use Cowork when you would rather review a finished artifact than approve forty steps.
Concretely, that means:
Long tasks. Work continues when you close your laptop, because the task runs remotely rather than on your machine. Start something before a meeting, come back to it after.
Handoffs. Anything where the intermediate steps do not interest you and the output does. You are not learning from watching this one. You just want it done.
Work that follows you. Sessions and files save to your Claude account and travel across surfaces. Start on the desktop app, check progress from your phone, pick it back up at your desk.
Anything with a batch of inputs. A folder of documents you want processed once is a very different job from a working directory you are going to keep editing all week.
Cowork gives you three permission modes: Manual, Auto, and Skip. Auto consumes more usage than the others because it checks each action as it goes. That is worth knowing before you set it and walk away.

When should you use Claude Code?
Use Claude Code when you want to see every change before it lands.
The clearest signal is the folder. If you are pointing the agent at a real working directory you care about, one you will open again tomorrow and the week after, you want approval on each action. Claude Code gives you that by default.
The second signal is repetition. Processes you run the same way every week benefit from the rules being written down and the steps being visible. You are not delegating a one-off. You are running a system, and systems get better when you can watch them fail.
The third is trust calibration. When you are new to a kind of task, watching the agent work is how you learn what it does well. Delegate after you know the shape of the output, not before. Which one should a non-developer start with?
Cowork. Start there.
The terminal is the thing that stops people. Not the concepts, not the prompting, not the agentic model of work. The blinking cursor and the fear of typing the wrong command into it. Cowork removes that entirely, and it puts agentic work in the same message box where you already talk to Claude.
That is not a downgrade. You are running the same engine. You are just running it without the part that has nothing to do with your actual job.
The counterargument is that the terminal teaches you something. It does. But you learn it faster once you already understand what agentic work feels like, and Cowork is the shortest path to that understanding. Can you use both?
Yes, and most people who use these tools seriously end up doing exactly that.
The pattern is simple. Cowork handles the one-off handoffs, the things you want done while you do something else. Claude Code handles the processes that run every week, where the rules are written down and you want to watch the changes land.
Neither replaces the other, because they are not competing for the same job. Declaring a winner would get more clicks. It would also be wrong.
Which one is this task? Run it against these five questions.
1. Do I need to see each change before it happens? If yes, Claude Code. 2. Will I run this again next week the same way? If yes, Claude Code. 3. Would I rather review one finished output than approve every step? If yes, Cowork. 4. Do I want to close the laptop while this runs? If yes, Cowork. 5. Is this folder a working directory I care about, or a batch of inputs I want processed once? Working directory means Claude Code. Batch means Cowork. Tiebreaker: if you are unsure, run it in Cowork first. You lose nothing, and you find out what the work actually needs.
Which one costs more?
Neither. They draw from the same usage pool on the same paid plan, so there is no price difference between them.
What differs is consumption rate. Cowork burns through usage faster per task because multi-step agentic work is compute-intensive by nature, and Auto mode consumes more than the other permission modes because it checks every action along the way. That is a throughput question, not a pricing question, and it is the answer most comparison pages get wrong.
